Rock Chicks: The Untold Story is the first major exhibition about the contributions of female artists to Australia's music heritage.
The exhibition, now on at Victoria's Arts Centre until 27 February 2011, reaches back prior to the advent of television and arrival of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s to include fascinating stories of the strong and talented women of vaudeville, all-girl jazz bands and the featured vocalists of the 1930s and 1940s big bands. Through the 1960s, the rise of the folk and jazz movement in the 1970s, punk, new wave and the era of mainstream recognition in the 1980s the exhibition continues to the present day.
Adalita of rock band Magic Dirt commented "I think this exhibition is a long time coming and hopefully it will set off a whole new generation of women making their mark in music..."
ABC Library Sales provided several clips to the exhibition including footage of Margaret Roadknight, Wendy Saddington, Jeannie Lewis, The Divinyls, Marcia Hines , Renee Geyer, and Do Re Mi.
Other artists featured in the exhibition include Chrissy Amphlett, Little Pattie, Marcie Jones, Judith Durham, Jane Clifton, Deborah Conway, Sherry Rich, Rebecca Barnard, Adalita, Diana Anaid, Stephanie Ashworth, Missy Higgins and Katy Steele.
